A Vegetarian Pregnancy


Most of the vegerarian women worry about the effect on their developing baby during pregnany that may arise from their diet. But if routine for the meal is carefully planned, nothing to be worried about. The mother and the baby can get all the essential nutrients from a carefully planned vegetarian diet.


There are many positive sides while maintaining a vegetarian diet during pregnancy. First of all, proteins from vegetable sources are easier on kidneys. Vegetarian diet also prevents tooth decay which is very common in pregnancy. Moreover, in general, vegeratians are at less risk from the following conditions:

Cancer
Obesity
Heart Disease
Hypertension
Type 2 Diabetes
Gallstones
Constipation


Folate, iron, calcium, fatty acids, protein are essential for every pregnant woman. Specifically, a pregnant woman who is a vegetarian may eat and drink the followings foods and drinks:

  • ·        6-11 servings of rice, bread, cereal and pasta per day.
  • ·        3-4 servings of beans or its alternatives per day.
  • ·         4-5 servings of vegetables per day.
  • ·        4 or more servings of fruits per day.
  • ·        8 servings of milk or its alternatives per day.
  • ·        2 servings of Omega 3 fatty acids per day.


The following foods and drinks should be carefully avoided by a pregnant woman:

  • ·        Unpasteurized milk and Unpasteurized soft cheeses.
  • ·        fresh unpasteurized fruit and vegetable juices and raw vegetable sprouts.
